John R Morrison had a very inventive mind. He was awarded two patents on October 15, 1861, #33489, an apparatus for cleaning feathers, and #33490, a washing machine. He imparted this creativity to his children as three of them became inventors with US patents as well as his brother Henry Morrison. James Beall Morrison, Doctor of Dentistry, was the most successful inventor of the group with his dental drill invention, but Alexander Wells Morrison also invented a dental chair and William Newton Morrison invented dental apparatus as well as other mechanical devices for railroads including a car coupler and pneumatic door closing device.

John R. and Sallie Hammond Morrison are both buried in Lot 2320 of the Bellefontaine Cemetery, 4947 W. Florissant Ave., St. Louis, Missouri. The grave site is marked by a large granite boulder carved with the name Morrison, however, the plaque has been removed. The site is in a beautiful location overlooking part of St. Louis and alongside a monument to George Rogers Clark, a Revolutionary War Hero and older brother of William Clark of Lewis and Clark fame.

Other members of the Morrison family buried there include, George W Morrison, Alexander Wells Morrison, William Newton Morrison and his wife Cornelia Holmes Morrison, and their son, Peter Holmes Morrison and his wife Mary Marriot Morrison.
