Janet Valentine (Nettie) Koellmer, 97, died May 12, 2010, at Masonicare Hospital in Wallingford.

She was born February 14, 1913 in Greenwich to Janet (Pinckney) and Livingston Clark Pero. She was an only child.

At the conclusion of World War II, she and her husband moved from Greenwich to Darien, where she lived happily for the next fifty-seven years on Walmsley Road. In 2004, she gave up her beloved home and moved to Ashlar Village retirement community in Wallingford, where she spent the last six years of her life.

Her working career in the retail industry included such stores as Franklin Simon, Peck & Peck, Lord & Taylor and finally, the Whitney Shop in New Canaan. She was proud of her work and very valued by her employers. Her out-going and friendly nature was enjoyed by all her regular customers.

She was active in the Altar Guild at St. Luke's Church and a thirty-year volunteer for the Darien Chapter of the American Red Cross.

She was predeceased by her husband, Edward R. Koellmer, in 1979. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, sharing decades of memories and stories while maintaining a truly wonderful sense of humor. Family members include two sons, Jeffrey C. Koellmer of Bedford, NH, and Mark E. Koellmer of Southport, NC; two grandsons, Jeffrey Scott Koellmer and Andrew Clark Koellmer; four great-grandchildren, Joshua Scott, Morgan Elizabeth, Samantha Valentine, and Griffin Andrew; and eight nephews.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, May 17, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Post Road, Darien, CT. A service celebrating her life will be held on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 1864 Post Road, Darien.
A private family burial will be held at Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich.
