BIO: Born in Valva, daughter of Carmine Francesco Maria Alfano and Loreta Maria D'Ambrosio. According to family legend, Maria Antonia Alfano Freda was not one to sit by idly and do nothing in America. She somehow learned that seamstress work could be obtained in New York City. She would go there and pick up garments that required fancy embroidery and the like and bring them back to Newark where she employed about 40 women to do the work. Although she could not read or write English, she managed to travel to and from New York City without getting lost. She took a piece a chalk with her and marked the corners of building where she was to make her turns and which way. When it came time to figure up the bill, she would ask her husband Amodio how many dollars it would be. He would use pencil and paper and come up with a number. While he was doing his figuring, she also was making her own calculations except hers were done all in her head. And she would correct him if there was any difference between their calculations. This tale tends to amplify the earlier remakes regarding her intelligence as a young child and as an adult. Another interesting fact is that several of her Alfano relatives took the path and life of the Church. Two of Maria Antonia's uncles held rather high positions in the Roman Catholic Church. Monsignor Vicario Alfano and Arcivescovo Giovanni Alfano along with two cousins who were priests- Don Giacomoino Alfano and Don Giannetto (Jack ) Alfano.
