Daughter of Carl and Mina (Went) Lueke. She attended school through the eighth grade. Leona lived on the farm and cared for her mother, father, invalid sister, and two brothers until they married. She moved to Columbus in 1947 and prepared meals at the Columbus Hospital for $1.00 a day. Leona was also employed at Scott's Dime Store, the Shirt Factory, Coast to Coast, Loup Engineering, and Brodekey's Jewelry.
Leona was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus where she sang in the choir, and took part in the Madonna Bible Study and Ladies Aid. She loved to garden, cook, bake, and sew. Leona was also the caregiver for many of her immediate family.
