Robert H. Roemer, 94, of Lake Carey, Pa., passed away on Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the Golden Living Center, where he resided since 2006. Born in the Bronx, N.Y. to the late George and Johanna Roemer on March 22, 1916, Bob moved to Hawthorne, N.Y., when he was a teenager and graduated from Briarcliff High School in the mid 1930s. Bob joined the Bakelite Division of the Union Carbide Corporation while attending New York University. With the beginning of World War II, Bob became an officer in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a flight instructor to future pilots of B-17s and B-29s. In February 1942, he married Kittie Hartranft, daughter of the late Dr. John L. and Kate Hartranft of New Rochelle, N.Y. Kittie and Bob spent their first few years together living near Army bases located in places such as Walnut Ridge, Ark., Cape Girardeau, Mo. and Columbus, Ohio. After the war, Bob resumed his work at Union Carbide, and Bob and Kittie settled in Pleasantville, N.Y., where they had two children and lived for 28 years. Bob left Union Carbide in the early 1950s to serve as vice president of Toscony Inc. (a textile company) and in the early 1960s for the R. W. Linscott Co., where he served in the same capacity. In 1975, Bob and Kittie moved to Lake Carey, a place where Kittie had spent summers with family since she was born. After refurbishing the former home of Admiral Harold Stark, Bob continued to work designing and installing kitchens, bathrooms, and dining rooms for Abington Cabinetry. Woodworking had always been a passion of his, and he excelled at the craft. Bob was an active member of the Rotary Club, American Legion and Lake Carey Fire Department. With Bob's passing, he leaves Kittie, his loving wife of 68 years; a son, Robert (Cindy), who lives in Paramus, N.J.; and a daughter, Jill King (Larry), living in Cortland, N.Y. He had three grandchildren, Jenny Roemer Nelles (Rex), Robin Roemer and Emily King. A memorial service will be held at Harding-Litwin Funeral Home 123 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock on Wednesday at 2 p.m. Friends may call Wednesday one hour before the service. Interment with military honors will be held in Sunnyside Cemetery, Tunkhannock.
