Katherine (Katy) Sophia Trippel was rhe daughter of Johann Heinrich (Henry) Trippell and Maria Becker. She was a Russian or Volga German from the German colony of Warenburg, Russia, where she was born on Dec. 20th, 1887. The family came to America in 1898 and first settled in Nebraska before moving to eastern Washington state. She married John Renz on 29 Sept 1907 in Ritzville, WA. John was also a Russian-German emigrant from Odessa, Russia, now in the Ukraine. The family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado around 1919 along with their parents and several of their friends and neighbors, also Russian Germans. Most were families who worked on the sugar beet farms around Ft. Collins. The couple had 8 children. After the death of her husband, John, she remarried a widower, Carl Herbert. Katy died in 1984 at the age of 96.

She was born in Warenburg (Privalnaja, Privalnaya, Priwalnoje, Privalnoye, Privolnoye), on the Volga River, in Russia. The family--parents and 5 children-- emigrated in 1898, arriving on 18 November in New York, aboard the Patria from Hamburg. They settled at first in Lincoln, Nebraska, and moved on to Adams County, Washington, by 1904, the year in which Katherine was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Lind. She married John Renz in 1907 at age 19. They lived at first in Adams County, in Willis and then Odessa. In 1920, they are living in Riverside, Larimer, Colorado. This area remained their home. Katy bore eight children. After her husband's death in 1956, she married Carl Herber.
