Kurt Duane Metzler, 45, of 272 Chapman St., died May 12 at home.
Born Dec. 29, 1958, in Greenfield, he was the son of Harvey W. and Virginia (Langston) Metzler of Greenfield.He was a lifelong resident of Greenfield, where he attended local schools, and was a 1977 graduate of Greenfield High School. He received an associate's degree in computer science in 1979 from Greenfield Community College.
Mr. Metzler worked as a systems support specialist at the former Amherst HBO, now McKesson Corp., retiring this year because of failing health. He had also owned his own business, Shoestring Printers in Greenfield.
Diagnosed with cystic fibrosis at birth, he received a double lung transplant in 1993.
During periods of better health, he was able to accomplish many of his goals, including playing golf, downhill skiing, in-line skating, motorcycling, skydiving and rock climbing. He also played tennis, went skeet shooting and bird hunting and received a brown belt in karate.
Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Craig Metzler, of Montague; a sister, Janice Fisk, of Greenfield; a niece and a nephew; and several cousins.
