She graduated from Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio and gained further qualifications in Library Science from Baylor. She taught school in San Antonio and also worked at Christ the King School library in Dallas. Grace spent the early year years of her life amidst and as witness to some of the most significant events of the 20th centenary. The Second World War brought her together with her husband Russ Tower, a member of the Army Air Corps from Massachusetts, whom she met at the Randolph Field Officers Club near San Antonio. She celebrated the end of the war in Washington D.C. where she was living with her sister, Mary Jane. Then in April 1946. she joined the first mass movement of militarily dependents to Europe and resided in Bavaria with Russ where her eldest child, Jane, was born. From this she recounted to her children traveling in in war ravaged Europe and the chilling experience of attendance at the Nuremberg War Trials. Upon their return to Texas, Grace and Russ raised a further four children with the loving support of Lola Lee Bonner. Grace had a love of gardening and gardens that was passed down to her by her Mother. She also enjoyed the visual and performing arts revelling in trips with her children to museums locally and in New York and Europe. As well, the Dallas Opera season was a particular favorite. This love of the arts was a gift that has passed to her children along with a passion for politics. She cast her final vote for Barack Obama indicating to her children who voted otherwise, a Mother who was very hopeful. Grace is survived by her husband of 67 years, John Russell Tower, son Stephen Roos Tower of Memphis, daughters Jane Doughtery of Winston-Salem, Regan Douglas of Perth, Australia, and Angela Walker of Birmingham.
