Jesse, the son of Domingo Nunez and Mary Nunez of Yoakum TX, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 12 1967 in San Antonio TX. He arrived in Vietnam on April 3 1968, and was assigned to Company K, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the Tet Offensive, with reported heavy contact with a large NVA force, Company K sent a reaction platoon to reinforce the Marines of Company M and drive the enemy of their entrenched positions in the Duong Lam, Bo Ban village complexes of Hieu Duc District. The distance would have to be covered on foot, and fought all the way by the men until they reached the Marines who were having a difficult time dislodging a stubborn enemy that refused to give up or flee. Maneuvering north towards Company M the Marines became pinned down by the NVA who were hidden in a tree line, taking several casualties from the enemy fire they finally managed to break through reaching Company M positions. The friendly forces were consolidated and began what would be the final thrust against the NVA they had been battling throughout the night and most of the day. LCpl Nunez was one of the casualtes during the fire fights, he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire.
