A 35-year-old Lebanon man was killed and 13 persons were injured in nine traffic accidents in Reading and Berks County yesterday afternoon and last night. Victim of the fatal accident was Peter, P. Zima, of 305 Cumberland Street, Lebanon, who was killed instantly following a two-car collision on the Harrisburg Pike, a mile west of Wernersville, state police reported. Injured in the Harrisburg Pike accident was Jacob W. Hunsicker, 50, of 815 Locust St., who suffered cuts of the left eyebrow, brush burns of the right knee and chest and a possible fractured jaw. His condition was reported good late last night in the Reading Hospital. Both accident victims were taken to the hospital in the Schuylkill Fire Company ambulance. The collision occurred a block east of the entrance to the Wernersville State Hospital which is a mile west of the borough of Wernersville. State Troopers Donald W. Holloway and Arthur W. McAnally reported that tire marks indicated Zima's car went off onto the dirt shoulder on the north side of the highway as he was traveling west. Then, police said, Zima's car swerved sharply to the left after he steered it back onto the three-lane highway. The Zima car swerved into the path of Hunsicker's vehicle, which was traveling toward Reading. Hunsicker's car went down a 15-foot embankment on the south side of the highway and halted upright in a field. Hunsicker was thrown from the vehicle. Zima's car was spun around by the impact and halted facing east. Police said that Zima was thrown out the right door of his coupe. Holloway reported that both vehicles were demolished. He estimated damage at $1,750. The accident occurred at 4:40 o'clock. Hunsicker is employed by the Reading Company as a storekeeper. [Reading Eagle, August 9, 1953, Page 1 & 31]
