"Julius Reiter, an early settler in Plainview Township, who subsequently through industry, perseverance and sound judgment achieved a notable success, becoming one of the most prominent and well-to-do citizens in the southern part of Wabasha County, was born in the province of Posen, Prussia, Germany. He was there married to Henrietta Wegner, and a few years after emigrated with his family to America, landing in this country June 19, 1868. His first settlement was made in Olmsted County, Minn., where he remained through the harvest, in the fall of the same year locating in Elgin Township, Wabasha County. There he remained for a few years working out. In 1874 he bought 80 acres in section 7, Plainview Township, on which he built a residence and outbuildings and began to establish a home ... He and his wife have been the parents of a family numbering twelve children: W. O., now a prosperous farmer and prominent citizen living in section 5, Plainview Township; Augusta, the wife of Emil Schwantz, of Elgin Township, J. J. of Rochester, Minn.; E. H. also of Rochester; A. F. and E. F., of Pine Island, Minn.; Bertha, wife of August Hanson of Louisberg, Minn.; Anna, deceased; Laura, now Mrs. August Greiger, of Louisville, Minn.; A. G. of McGregor, Minn.; Ida, wife of William Boice of Appleton, Minn., and G. A. of McGregor, Minn." [Franklin Curtiss-Wedge, Compiler, History of Wabasha County, Minnesota (H. C. Cooper, Jr. & Company, Winona, Minnesota, 1920, pp. 556-557)]

"Fifty Golden Years.
Surrounded by their children and grandchildren, numerous relatives and friends, Mr. and Mrs. Julius J. Reiter observed the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage at their pleasant home in Plainview Sunday. The aged couple received valuable presents, among others a gold-headed cane and a solid gold brooch with a diamond setting, the gift of the children. Rev. G. Drews delivered an impressive address appropriate to the occasion at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, and shortly afterwards all participated in a bounteous spread.

Mr. Reiter was born June 19, 1839, and Mrs. Reiter, whose maiden name was Henrietta Wegner, was born Nov. 12, 1846. Their native town was Kolmar, in the province of Posen, Germany, and they were married at that place fifty years ago [m 1864 Chodzież, Kolmar in Posen, Prussia]. They came to America June 19, 1868, their destination being Rochester, Minn. The following fall they settled in the town of Elgin, where they resided for seven years. In 1875 they moved to a farm one-half mile west of Plainview, and three years ago retired, since that time making their home in the village.

Mr. and Mrs. Reiter were the parents of thirteen children, two of them having passed to the Great Beyond. Gustav died in infancy and Mrs. Anna Zabel died May 3, 1911. Those living are: William O. Reiter, residing near Plainview; Mrs. August Schwantz, residing near Elgin; Julius J., Ernst H. and George A. Reiter, Rochester; August F. and Edward F. Reiter, Pine Island; Mrs. Bertha Hansen, Plainview; Albert G. Reiter, Powers Lake, N.D.; Mrs. Laura Grieger and Mrs. Ida Boie, Lewisville, Minn. There are 39 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mr. and Mrs. Reiter are both enjoying good health. They are an estimable old couple having always been enterprising and public-spirited citizens, and many good wishes go out to them for peace and comfort in the winter of life."
