Services Held For Rev. Father Philip Reiser
A Funeral Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals for Rev. Fr. Philip Reiser, 68, O'Neill, NE was celebrated at 10:00 A. M., Wednesday, June 29, 1994 at SS. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Butte, NE.
Presiding at the Mass was a cousin, Fr. Richard Reiser, O'Neill, wearing Fr. Phil's ordination vestments.
Concelebrants were Fr. Vincent Olinger S.V.D, cousin, Papua, New Guinea, Bishop George Fitzsimons, Salina, KS and Fr. John Starostka, Omaha, both seminarian classmates, Fr. Philip Poirier, representative from the Phoenix, Arizona Diocese and other priests of the Archdiocese of Omaha.
Mass Servers were Jerome Reiser and Craig Reiser, O'Neill and Troy Reiser, Butte.
Lectors were Annette Lehmann, Ames, IA, Colleen Heitmann, Victor, IA and Greg Reiser, Kansas City, Missouri.
Gift Bearers were Victor Blum, Lincoln, Virgil Blum, Omaha, Gene Reiser, Sioux City, IA and Janet Reiser, Kansas City. Music was provided by SS. Peter & Paul Choir accompanied by Pat Thiry, Butte. Special music was sung by Glenda and Angela Mahaney of Denison, IA.
Pall Bearers were Paul Reiser, Denison, IA Bob Reiser, Des Moines, IA, Martin Reiser, Spencer, Steve Reiser and Ben Reiser, O'Neill and Phil Blum, Omaha. All those participating in the funeral were nieces and nephews of Fr. Phil's.
Christian Symbols and family pictures were presented by his brothers and sister.
The 4th degree Knights of Columbus from O'Neill and Boyd County and the American Legion Post #51, Butte provided an honor guard. Taps was played by Mary Reiser, O'Neill.
Following the funeral, lunch was provided by the Altar Society of Butte.
A Rosary and Wake Service was held at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday evening at SS. Peter & Paul Church.
Interment was in SS. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Butte. Arrangements were by Jones-Thenhaus Funeral Home.
Fr. Philip Reiser was born on May 13, 1926 at Butte, NE to Frank and Mary (Dophide) Reiser. He graduated from SS. Peter & Paul Parochial School and Butte Public High School in 1943.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged on March 31, 1947.
A few years later he entered Mount Carmel Seminary, Niagara Falls, Ontario to prepare for the priesthood. He also attended St. Mary's Mission House at Techny, IL and Conception Seminary at Conception, Missouri. He was ordained a priest on May 27, 1961 at Conception, Missouri for the diocese of Gallup, New Mexico and later the Phoenix diocese. Fr. Phil celebrated his first Solemn Mass on June 3, 1961 at Ss. Peter & Paul Church in Butte.
All of Fr. Phil's thirty three years of priesthood have been served in Arizona.
In April 1994, he was forced to retire from the priesthood due to poor health. He returned to O'Neill to live with his sister, Sylvia and husband, Melvin Blum until his condition worsened and he had to be hospitalized. He died at the Niobrara Valley Hospital at Lynch, Nebraska on June 25, 1994.
Through the years Fr. Phil was very dedicated to his vocation. He built the churches in Camp Verde, China Valley, Mayer and Prescott Valley along with a Religious Education Center and Parish hall at Prescott Valley which was named Reiser Hall.
Father Phil is survived by his mother, Mary and seven brothers, one sister and one adopted sister; Vince & Martha Reiser, Butte, Joe & Virginia Reiser, Denison, IA, Herb & Mildred Reiser, O'Neill, Ronald & Sue Reiser, Denison, IA, Matt & Dorothy Reiser, Omaha, Sylvia & Melvin Blum, O'Neill, Charles &: Betty Reiser, Kansas City, Missouri and Della Reiser of Homosassa, FL and many nieces and nephews, relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Reiser.
