Norman Gustav Ornes, Brashear community farmer died at 12:10 p.m. on February 3, 2001 at the age of 98 years old.
He was born on December 24, 1902 in Brooklyn, New York, the son of Norwegian immigrants Kristan J. and Marie Leverson Ornes. He was orphaned at the age of five and with three brothers, rode the "orphan Train" to Missouri. The "Orphan Train" was sponsored by the New York Children's Aid Society and operated over a period of 1854 to 1929. Norman was raised as a foster son of the George Grant Parker family of Stover, Missouri and later of Brashear, Missouri.
In 1928, Norman married Vivian Guy who preceded him in eath in 1935 leaving one daughter, Norma, Mrs. Delbert Howerton of Hurdland, Missouri.
In 1938 he married Gladys Spencer who survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Allen of Detroit, Michigan, Marvin of Denver, Colorado and Harold of Cedar City, Utah; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Normans brothers, Christian, Conrad, Arthur and Marcus and a sister Bertha all preceded him in death.
Mr. Ornes was engaged in farming all his life southwest of Brashear until his retirement. He was a member of the Brashear Community Bible Church.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday February 6, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. at the Davis-Playle-Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Kirksville. Rev. Gary Zikan will officiate. Music will be provided by Harold Moyer, soloist and Mildred Cooper, organist. Selections will be "In The Land Where We Never Grow Old" and "My Real Home". Burial will be in the Brashear cemetery.
Bearers will be Steve Crockett, Lavern Gerhold, Brent Shelton, Doug Clarkson, Joe Shelton and Lonnie Osborn.
