Former County Sheriff Simon Knotts, 92, Dies

Simon Ambrose Knotts, 92, 2707 27th St., Parkersburg, former Wood County sheriff, died Thursday afternoon at his home following an extended illness.

Knotts was born in Windy, Wirt County, W.Va., a son of the late Luke W. and Sarah Reeder Knotts. He was the only living charter member of the Parkview United Methodist Church where he was in charge of maintenance for several years.

In 1912, he moved to Parkersburg and in 1913, went to word for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, where is was employed for more than 45 years until his retirement in 1963. During this time, he left the B&O for five years when he worked for O. Ames Co.

Knotts served as Wood County sheriff from 1949 to 1953 and as deputy assessor of Wood County from 1937 to 1942. He was a member of the B&O Veterans and the National Association of Retired Railroad Workers.

Surviving are four sons, Stanton C. Knotts, Leland D. "Lee" Knotts and Wood County Assessor Eugene A. Knotts, all of Parkersburg, and Paul M. Knotts of Southport, N.C.; three daughters, Mrs. Aud (Helen) Archer and Sarah Jane Shumway, both of Parkersburg, and Mrs. Jim (Doris) DeSouza of Livonia, Mich.; a sister Ethel Saul of Canton, Ohio; 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carrie Ethel Marshall Knotts, in 1976. They had been married for 56 years. Six brothers and six sisters also preceded him in death.

Services will be Monday, 1 p.m. , at the Leavitt Funeral Home, Parkersburg, with the Rev. James Mitchem and the Rev. Donald Underwood officiating. Burial will be in the IOOF Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday after 7 p.m.
