Fitzpatrick Dies; Ex-Journal Editor
Lawrence H. Fitzpatrick, 67, of 609 Chapman St., who retired as executive editor of the Wisconsin State Journal here in September, 1972 after 41 years as a newspaperman, died at about 5:30 a.m. today at University Hospitals after a long illness. He was admitted March 11.
Mr. Fitzpatrick succeeded the late Roy L. Matson in 1960, and at that time became responsible for the editorial operation of the Journal. He was designated executive editor in 1967.
He had started his career with Madison's morning newspaper as a copy editor, and had worked in nearly every position on the Journal staff.
Mr. Fitzpatrick has served as president of the Wisconsin Associated Press, and also had headed the editors, organization of Lee Enterprises. He attended and served as lecturer at seminars of the American Press Institute at Columbia University, He had also lectured at the UW School of Journalism.
A native of Superior, Mr. Fitzpatrick was initiated there into journalism under tutelage of Gordon MacQuarrie at the Superior Telegram. Mr. Fitzpatrick came to Madison in 1931 (MacQuarrie later became a well known sports and outdoors writer for the Milwaukee Journal.)
He soon began working the police and fire beats --- subsequently engaging in sharp rivalry with the late Herman Lochner, veteran police reporter of The Capital Times.
Known as "Fitz" to friends, acquaintances, and newspaper contemporaries on both papers, he later served as court reporter, general assignment reporter, Capitol writer, political writer, and, in 1941, city editor. He was promoted to managing editor in 1958.
His older brother, the late Daniel R. Fitzpatrick, was a world-famous editorial cartoonist for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize.
Surviving Mr. Fitzpatrick are his wife, the former Frances Risdon of Duluth, Minn., to whom he was married June 29, 1932; a daughter, Patricia, at home; a brother, Leo F. Fitzpatrick, 4338 Herrick Lane, and a nephew, L. James Fitzpatrick, 6321 Keelson Dr.
Funeral Mass for Lawrence Fitzpatrick will be conducted Monday at 11 a m. in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church here. Interment will be in the family plot in Bee Ridge Cemetery at Edina, Mo.
There was to be no visitation. The Frautschi Funeral Home, 3610 Speedway Rd., is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the McCardle Laboratory for Cancer Research at the University of Wisconsin.
