CHALMER F. READ, 91
Chalmer F. Read, 91, of Okoboji, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2007, at the Milford Care Center.
A funeral service was held Monday, Aug. 27, at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. Burial was at the Brooklyn Memorial Cemetery at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 28.
Chalmer was born on Nov. 2, 1915, in Brooklyn to Forrest and Laura (Miller) Read. He was united in marriage to Beulah (Bea) Coburn on March 6, 1936, in Marengo. Bea passed away on May 30, 1999. Chalmer married Hazel Wills on July 21, 2000, in Spirit Lake.
Chalmer graduated from the College of Mortuary Science in 1946. He worked as a furniture dealer and a funeral director for 52 years. Chalmer was a member of the Brooklyn Lions Club, the Algona Lions Club, the Abu-Bekhr Shrine Club and was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed golfing and playing cards.
Chalmer is survived by his wife, Hazel Read of Okoboji; a daughter, Sherry Lawson, and her husband, Lee, of Ft. Wayne, Ind.; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a son-in-law, Vernon Koehn of Victor; two step-daughters, Linda Kleve, and her husband, Gary, of Ocheyedan, and Connie Stahly, and her husband, Dan, of Lake Park; five step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Laura; his first wife, Bea; a daughter, Kae Koehn; and a grandchild.
