SMITH, Janie Sansing, 85, of Montgomery, AL, a native of Newton, MS, died Friday, April 1,2005. Funeral services will be held at First United Methodist Church of Montgomery, AL. on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation in the church Friendship Room one hour prior to service. Dr. Karl Stegall and Rev. Joe Hastings will officiate. Interment will follow at Old Wetumpka City Cemetery in Wetumpka. She was preceded in death by husband Dr. William Lamar Smith, April 1, 1991. Mrs. Smith is survived by her children Betsy Smith Watson and husband Tom of Montgomery; Sansing Smith McPherson and husband Terry of Hilton Head Island, SC; William Lamar Smith, Jr. and wife Carol of Philadelphia, PA; George Bernard Smith II of Birmingham. Her nine grandchildren are Winston Pirtle, Jr., wife Tyra; Laurel Watson Floyd, husband Dan; Cynthia McPherson Frantz, husband Andy; Duncan Hamilton McPherson; William Lamar Smith III, wife Jennifer; Bryce James Smith; Stephanie Anne Smith; Jonathan Daniel Smith; and Allison Marie Smith. She has six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Smith volunteered over her lifetime in many areas including United Methodist Women, Mothers Circle, Tri Hi Y, and Girl Scouts. She was president of numerous organizations: Cloverdale PTA, Keep Montgomery Beautiful, International Training in Communications, Women's Auxiliary to the Montgomery County Medical Association, Women's Auxiliary to the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and Montgomery County Republican Women. In 1999 she received a Seniors of Achievement Award from Montgomery Area Council on Aging. Memorial donations may be made to First United Methodist Church of Montgomery Building Fund.
