Addie grew up in the Vancouver, Washington, vicinity in a large farm family with six brothers and three sisters.

She was an accomplished artist. One of her pieces of artwork, a hand-painted tree ornament, hung on one of the Christmas trees in the White House. Addie was well-known for the pastoral scenes she painted on small milk glass plates.

Addie married Walter Heisler in 1946. They raised one son and two daughters. Addie and Walter owned a dairy farm northeast of Vancouver.
