August Carl Gellenbeck, 86, of R.8, died at 4:30 pm, Wednesday, at St. Elizabeth Hospital following a six week illness. Born in the western part of Germany, he came to the United States at the age of 16. First settling in North Dakota, he then came to the Lafayette vicinity in 1917.
He married Anna B. Dexter in 1893. He owned and operated a gravel pit at Elston for several years and was a concrete contractor. He was a member of the Stidham Memorial Presbyterian Church in Elston.
Surviving with the widow are four sons, Harry of Bridgeport, Oscar (Ruth)and Louis (Evelyn)of Lafayette, and Hugh (Aldine) of R.8; six daughters, Mrs. Mamie L. (Willis) Myers of Carrington, N.D., Mrs. Tillie (John) VanMeter of Colfax, Mrs. Alice (Wilbur) Pence of Louisville, KY., Mrs. Ila (Arthur) Segal Sr., Mrs. Dorothy (Isaiah) Flack and Mrs. Elizabeth (Gordon) Hilt all of R.8.
Funeral Notice: Gellenbeck, August Carl. Friends may call after 1 pm Friday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Services held in Hippensteel Chapel at 10 am Saturday. Reverend Stanley Rupp officiating.
Interment in Spring Vale Cemetery.
Also surviving are 43 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren.

August came to America alone in 1886 as a 16 yr. old young man. (according to the S.S. Donau ship manifest) He came through the New York Port and headed to Ohio to meet up with family members there.
He married Anna Dexter in 1893 in Preston, Minnesota and they lived there next door to Anna's parents for 7 yrs. August applied for and obtained land for homesteading in North Dakota.
The spelling of his last name was originally Gehlenbeck as listed on the homesteading application. Sometime later, it was spelled Gellenbeck and stayed that way until his death.
He moved his family to Carrington, Foster Co., North Dakota in 1900. In 1905 he moved his family to Willow Springs, Kansas, but by 1910 they were back in North Dakota. In 1917 they then moved to Lafayette, Tippecanoe Co., Indiana where he remained until his death.
There are at least 7 generations of Gellenbecks.
