Fred Marten, Sandhills rancher

Fred J. Marten was born Feb.28, 1910 to Herman and Katie Marten and departed this life May 21, of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever at the Good Samaritan Hospital at Kearney, at the age of 75 years, two months and 23 days.
Fred was baptized in the Lutheran Church at Merna April 3, 1910 and confirmed Sept. 9, 1926. He spent his childhood days on the family farm eight miles west of Broken Bow. He attended school at District No. 74 west of Broken Bow.
Fred was united in marriage to Ruthanna Johnson of Merna Aug. 12, 1937. To this union four children were born. In 1942 Fred and Ruthanna and the two older children moved to Purdum, where two more children were born. He spent the rest of his life on the Marten Ranch. Besides his family and ranching, Fred loved to visit with friends and relatives.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Ruthanna, of Purdum; son, Herman, his wife Shirley and children Inger and Tim of Purdum; daughter Barbara Staab of Gothenburg; son, Karl, his wife Melva and children Adam and Susan of Halsey; daughter Judi and Darren of Broken,Bow; two brothers Herman and William both of Broken Bow two sisters Dorothy Davidson of Modesto, Calif., and Louise Britton of Broken Bow; several nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held May 24, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Merna with the Rev. David Jaskierney officiating. Music was furnished by Emma Lyon and Jon Holloway, soloist, of Dunning. Pallbearers were Bob Cox, Earl Bestol, William Britton, Bill Jensen, Jerry Safranek and Leonard Cowdin.
Honorary Pallbearers were all relatives, friends and neighbors.
