Simon was born to Jacob F. and Mathilda (Steinhoff) Rose November 26, 1898 at German City, Iowa. The family moved to Bloomfield in 1910. In 1912 his father was killed in a farming accident. The six children ranged in age from 11 months to 16 years. Simon attended school until he had completed the 7th grade and then found it necessary to spend full time attending to the family and farming with the help of relatives, friends and neighbors.
Mathilda was born to William F. and Anna (Buhrman)Busskohl, April 23, 1905 on a farm near Creighton, NE. At the age of 13 having completed the 7th grade she began working. She held jobs at the hotel, café and several homes.
The couple met at Walter League in 1924 when they were on the serving committee together. One year later on February 18, 1925 they were united in marriage by Rev. Ollenberg at First Trinity Lutheran Church in Bloomfield, NE. They lived in town for two years. At this time Simon had several odd jobs consisting of trucking, farming and road work. In 1927 they moved to a farm 4 miles west of Bloomfield. A couple months later a first child, Shirley (William Woods), was born. About a year later they moved to a farm and two more girls were born Fern (John Reynolds) and Elinor (Marvin Kuhl), were born. All were baptized and confirmed at First Trinity Lutheran Church and all graduated from Bloomfield High School.
After 48 years on this farm they moved to town.
Tillie loved to cook and bake and is remembered by the food she prepared and shared with many relatives and friends. She spent many hours doing all kinds of fancy work which she shared with others. She was active in Ladies Aid of First Trinity until her health failed. She passed away in 1979.
Simon then lived alone, cared for himself, raised a garden and was active in the Senior Citizen group. He passed away in 1986.
