In October 1899 a farmers trash fire threatened their family home as it ravaged the open prairie. They plowed the land around the home and set backfires to protect their few belongings. The same month a heavy snow storm covered the fields and hampered corn picking.
Peter met Frieda Martins, his bride-to-be at a neighbors barn dance. Peter and Frieda were married on December 23, 1914 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Bloomfield, NE. They began farming five miles south and four miles west of Bloomfield, near Frieda's father's farm.
Peter purchased one of the first corn pickers in the community. It was a Case two-row snapper, bought in the early 30's.
They became parents of eight children: Harvey of Bloomfield; Elsie Vakoc of Omaha; Melba Doty of El Cajon, CA; Velma Pederson of Torrance, CA; Harold of Bloomfield; Lois (deceased); Arlene Naugle of South Daytona, FL; Wesley of Bloomfield.
Both Frieda's father and brother Ted died of illnesses in 1919. Her brother John continued the farming operation. About 1927 he built a large cattle barn on the farm.
When John moved from the farm to pursue other farming jobs in the Bloomfield area, Peter and Frieda moved their family to the Martens home place. This was their home until 1962 when they moved to a home at 304 West Bazile in Bloomfield which they had purchased a few years earlier.
Peter purchased several other houses in Bloomfield which he enjoyed remodeling Frieda spent much time making quilts. the couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Dec 23, 1964.
