Martha Josephine "Josie" Pesterfield was born in Wise County, Texas on the 5 February 1864. Her father was Henry Lewis Pesterfield and mother was Nancy J Gant. Her mother died when Josie was only 2 years old. She had three sisters at the time of her mother's death. They moved from Texas to Arkansas. In 1871, her father remarried when she was seven to: Susan Adeline McMasters. They had nine children, eight of which survived to adulthood. Josie met and married Mark Lafayette Bacon in 1887, they were married on the 30th of June, 1887. They had six children: one daughter & five boys. While husband Mark was buying and selling property & working as a merchant, Josie was busy raising the children and keeping house. By the 1910 census, daughter Cora, had married and had a daughter of her own. Josie & Mark had five children at home, by the 1920 census, Mark was Chief of Police in Picher, Oklahoma. They lived in Quapaw, Ottawa, Oklahoma. They spent time in Tulsa, Oklahoma according to a directory in 1924. Son, Herbert Bacon, lived at home with Josie & Mark in 1930 in Bryan, Mayes, Oklahoma. Mark was a farmer & Herbert was employed as a laborer. Josie died of cancer on 22 January, 1936. She died many years before I was born, I am sure I would have adored her.
