LaVerne R. Schaaf, age 91, died at Panora Care and Rehab Center on July 8, 2010.

LaVerne was born January 21, 1919 in Avoca, Iowa the son of Arthur and Alma (Kartens) Schaaf. He graduated from Avoca High School in 1935. LaVerne farmed with his brother until his enlistment in the US Army on December 16, 1941, serving until 1945 during WW II. On November 10, 1946 LaVerne and Doris Kjeldgaard were married in Avoca, Iowa and celebrated 60 years of marriage at the time of her death in 2007. LaVerne was a 65 year member of the Dexter American Legion and a member of the Dexter United Methodist Church. After moving to Dexter in 1947 he owned and operated a hardware store and plumbing and heating business. He retired after 25 years with Beckman Brothers Plumbing Supply in 1991.

LaVerne is survived by his daughter Pat Mauer (Marc) of Baltimore,MD, their children: David Mauer of Denver, CO, Dianna Mauer of Austin, TX; daughter, Sharon Swartz (Jeff) of Dexter, IA; brother Mervin Schaaf of Harlan, IA; brother-in-law Herluf Kjeldgaard of El Dorada, AR; brother and sister- in-law Axel and Dorothy Kjeldgaard of Council Bluffs, IA, numerous nieces and nephews.
