Robert William Frederick Eggebrecht was born in Chicago, Illinois. When Robert was age 14, his parents died (his mother on July 31, 1888 and his father on November 22, 1888). Robert was sent to live with his uncle, John Massman, in the Austin neighborhood. When he was 18, Robert went to work for the Chicago & North Western Railroad. He began working as a brakeman in the yards in September of 1896.
He married Beatrice Shepard on March 13, 1897. They lived at various places in the Austin area and had ten children; four boys and six girls. In 1919, they purchased a home on Long Avenue and lived there for the rest of their lives.
Robert continued to work for the Chicago and North Western Railroad and retired on September 30, 1939 after 47 years with them. Robert had lived in Austin for 53 years when he died on June 13, 1941. He was buried in Mt. Emblem Cemetery.
