Inividual Summary:
Heinrich John Barhorst

Father: Carl Anton Barhorst
Mother: Maria Elizabeth Freking

Notes: Obit from Shelby County Democrat - Friday, August 24, 1906.

"Henry Barhorst, one of the oldest and most prominent residents fo McLean township, died at his home east of Loramie Thursday morning at 2 o'clock of kidney trouble after a long illness. He was born at Steinfeld, Oldenberg, Germany, September 30, 1828, and came to this country with his parents when sixteen years of age. They settled on a farm west of Loramie. June 5, 1855, he was married to Liseta Grieshop. For ten years they lived west of Loramie and then moved east of Loramie where they have since resided.
Eleven children were born to them: Henry, Herman, John, Bernard, Joseph, Anthony, Mary, Catherine and Rose Barhorst and Mrs. John Eilerman and Mrs. John Siegel, all living except Joseph, Mary, Catherine and Rose and all living in the vicinity of Loramie. Mr. Barhorst served McLean township fifteen years as township trustee. He was a prominent member of St. Michael's church. By industry and good management he accumulated considerable farm property and was one of the well-to-do farmers of the
neighborhood. Last June Mr. and Mrs. Barhorst celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. The funeral services will be held at 8 o'clock sun time Saturday morning at St. Michael's church in Loramie."
Notes: was a sailor on the Brig Anna Maria and sailed from Bremen to England on
February 26, 1848 with Captain Freidrich Anton. The Anna Maria also made several trips from Limerick, Ireland to New York including one that landed on Oct 31, 1848. This could have been an extension of the trip from Bremen to England. It is possible that Heinrich jumped ship at this time.

Heinrich had purchased 46.05 acres from the government on February 1, 1851. This land was located at the north-west corner of Schlater and Hilgefort Road, across from his fathers land. After his fathers death, Heinrich became the man of the house at the age of 24 and his mother, Elizabeth lived with him until her death on September 1, 1881.
