John was born in Oneida and lived there until his parents moved to Clark Mills where he grew up
and enlisted in the Marines 6 September 1967, at the New Albany Recruiting Office.
Upon arriving in Vietnam 12 March 1968 John was assigned to Bravo Company, 3rd Engineer
Battalion, 3rd Marine Division. John was on a mine sweep team on Route 561 and 5 kilometers south southeast of Con Thien (Hill 158), when the mine sweeping team was ambushed by hostile forces using rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire, at approximately 0800H. John was medevac to the 3rd Medical Battalion in Quang Tri and died at approximately 1030H, as a result of multiple fragmentation wounds to the body, while participating in Operation Idaho Canyon.
