John Clemens Hilgefort was the fourth of eight children born to Johann Theodur and Margaretha Elisabeth (Barhorst) Hilgefort on the Brockhaus Farm in Dinklage, Oldenburg, Germany. He emigrated to Baltimore on the ship Albert on September 24, 1847 with his parents and three living siblings. On June 3,1860, he married Maria Poeppelman, daughter of Henry Poeppelman. They acquired a farm on the east side of Hilgefort Road where they had 13 children.
