Otto was the husband of Gertrude and the father of Richard Thoene.

The following is the obituary from the Utica Sun published Thursday, December 18, 1941:

Otto Thoene, 53, passed away early Monday morning as a result of injuries sustained when his car crashed into a freight train at the west edge of Utica about six o'clock Sunday evening. He was rushed to a hospital in Lincoln where he passed away a few hours later.

Otto Karl Thoene was born on May 12, 1888 at Hildesheim, Hanover, Germany. In Hildesheim he completed his preparatory and advanced education. He came to America in October of 1912 and immediately chose Utica wherein to reside; then later, as the place to establish his home.

On September the 29th, 1915, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Severin of Utica. To this union two children were born. A daughter, Martha, who died in infancy, and a son, Richard, of Lincoln.

In 1914 he became associated with the First National Bank of Utica and served this institution in the capacity of assistant cashier and director until the time of his death. He was an active worker in the Red Cross and served as treasurer of the local chapter for a number of years. He also served the village conscientiously as its treasurer for several years. The welfare of the community was always one of his major interests and he favored every moved that would in any way tend to improve it.

He leaves to mourn his passing his beloved wife, Gertrude; his son, Richard; three sisters and three brothers in Hildesheim, Germany; Mrs. Minnie Severin of Utica; Mr. and Mrs. Lester Mapel of Seward; and an innumerable host of dear friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon from the Presbyterian church with Rev. Knauer in charge. Burial was made in the Utica cemetery.
