Born c.1682, "Capt. Thomas Mitchel Junr" died in "ye 59th year of his age" in the spring of 1741. Historians are uncertain as to whether or not his father was the Thomas Mitchel who participated in the Indian Wars in Massachusetts in 1689*. According to a history of Block Island by the Rev. Samuel Truesdale Livermore published in 1876, the Thomas Mitchel memorialized on this page represented the Island in the General Assembly during the year 1738. The inscription on his slate gravestone appears below.
