Dixie Lea Rice, 77, died Sunday, Aug. 1, 2010 at Hillcrest Nursing Home. Dixie was born on Sept. 21, 1932, in Sedgwick County, Colorado to John Benjamin and Evelyn (Stutzman) Michel.

She graduated from Shelton High School in 1950. On Dec. 27, 1950, she was united in marriage to Lesley Francis Rice in Shelton, Colorado. They enjoyed one year in the Shelton community before Lesley was drafted into the U.S. Army. After his boot camp, they were transferred to Germany where they lived for two years. Following Lesley's discharge, they returned to the Shelton area.

In 1976, they moved to Wallace where they purchased the Wallace Hotel. They operated the hotel for 27 years. After their retirement in 2001, they moved to a small acreage north of McCook.

Dixie loved to sew, cook and paint. She had an excellent green thumb, raising a large garden and reviving friends' houseplants. She treasured the time spent with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, John and Evelyn Michel; her husband, Lesley Rice on Nov. 16, 2003; brothers, Jim and Jerry Michel; and sister, Shirley Musil.

Survivors are: son, Ray Rice and wife, Sherri of Ravenna; daughter, Leslie and husband, Tim Sivits of Culbertson; 11 grandchildren, Benjamin and wife, Ashley and their daughter Vashti, Rebecca, Caleb, Brandi and Elizabeth Rice and Zachariah, Adrienne, Amanda, Jacob, Abigail and Jillian Sivits; nieces, nephews and a host of friends and relatives.
