Herman was born in Kalmar, Germany in 1859. He came to the United States at the age of four. His family settled in Michigan City and lived there for 12 years before coming to Medaryville, in Jasper County on a farm. When he was 21, he went to Chicago to work. On April 4, 1888 he was united in marriage to Gesena (Sena) Luken, daughter of Herman and Anna Luken. They owned a business in San Pierre for a number of years. Later he delivered the mail from the depot to the post office for a number of years on a high wheel cart until the mail was delivered to San Pierre by truck. Herman was also one of the founders of St. Luke Church in San Pierre and held a number of offices on the church council committees.
Herman and Sena celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on April 10, 1938. Records show that 247 people came to congratulate them.
