He was the son of Karl Cerny and Jaroslava (Maurer) Cerny. He married Victoria A Mach on April 19, 1941.

Cerny served with the 11th Air Force, 28th Bombardment Group, 404th Bombardment Squadron and he was the bombardier on B-24D #41-1104, nicknamed 'Iggy'. They were on a training flight out of Adak Island, Alaska when they had some kind of mechanical problem and went down in the ocean, 80 miles North-Northeast of the island. None of the crew was located.
