WWII: 349th Infantry Regiment, 88th Infantry Division

Duane Manny Siemsen was born on a farm at Redbird, Nebraska. After a hail storm destroyed their ripe crops, the family sold out and moved by train to Montana to take up ranching. When hog cholera gave them another setback, the family sold the ranch and bought a house in Silesia, Montana. When the time looked right his parents sold the house and went back to ranching, eventually settling down on a spread of their own outside Bridger, Montana. Electricity came to the ranch in 1941--and along with it a war. Duane was drafted in January 1944 and had shipped out for Europe by May. PFC Siemsen was wounded in action in October 1944, but was returned to action. He suffered frostbite to his feet and after receiving treatment was again returned to duty. PFC Siemsen was killed in action during the Po Valley Campaign while participating in the assault on Monterumici (south of Bologna), Italy, on April 17, 1945, less than a month before the war ended.
