Corporal Werner Hans Koebke, born 25 Jan 1923 in Lehe, Germany, was the son of Otto and Elsie Koebke of Brooklyn, NY. Lehe is in far northern Germany 63 miles due west of Bremen. Werner's family emigrated to New York 17 Dec 1928 when he was only 5. In the 1930 census 7 year old Werner is living with his parents and brother Howard 1, at 2010 Powell Ave., in the Bronx. His father is a building superintendent. He enlisted in the US Army 22 Jan 1943. He was assigned to the 52nd Infantry Regiment, attached to the 9 Armored Division. 9th Armored was advancing into northwestern Czechoslovakia temporarily attached to 1st Infantry Division during the first week of May, 1945. The NARA WWII casualty listing show Koebke, Werner H, Cpl, from Kings County, NY as DOW (Died of Wounds) 26 May 1945, 18 days after the end of hostilities on VE Day 8 May 1945.
