Born in Ontario, Canada in 1916 Colin was the son of George Dawson Thomson and Mary Beatrice Christie Thomson (nee Brander). He had a brother George James and a sister Beatrice Helen. His father was a draughtsman from Aberdeen, Scotland. His parents had married in 1910.

Although Colin was born in Montreal his parents and siblings were British and they returned to England after WW1. They returned to Glasgow from Montreal on the ship Cassandra which arrived in Scotland on the 8th June 1919.

In Leeds in 1942, Colin married Alice Murray Cunningham), and their home was at Newton Park, Leeds, Yorkshire. They had married in Leeds in 1942.

Colin is commemorated in Canada's Book of Remembrance which is displayed in the Memorial Chamber of the Peace Tower in Ottawa.
