Frank owned a boat called "Happy Hours." Edward Earl Bale lived with his Aunt and Uncle Frank between Nov. 1935 and May 1936, before he enlisted in the United States Navy. He stayed on the boat to guard against thieves. Frank and Maggie moved to Ruth Ellen Street, Los Angeles, CA. It is here Frank lived until Maggie's death in 1941. She was a Christian Science Convert and had a sore in her stomach that turned out to be cancer.
"Mrs. Margaret Louise Bale, beloved wife of Frank J. Bale, mother of Florine C. Bale, daughter of Mrs. Minnie Reames; sister of George H. Crawford and Mrs. Stella Pike. Service today at Wee Kirk of the Heather, Forest Law Mortuary in charge."
Frank Bale brought the "Sea Queen" a fishing charter boat which he moored at the San Pedro pier. Through out the years Frank had an array of odd passengers. One day he happened to be looking back to the bait tank and there was a man eating the raw fish. Frank found out the man was a Eskimo and he was just getting his breakfast.
For companionship Frank had two beautiful tri colored collies, "Queenie and Laddie" who were the offsprings of the original movie and t.v. fame "Lassie." Florine knew Rudd Wetherwax, owner of "Lassie" and she was able to get the animals for her father. "Queenie" had sea legs and rode the waves beautifully, but not Laddie. When rough seas were hit the poor Laddie would try to stand in the galley way. His legs would become putty and down he would go with his eyes rolling around in his head. Laddie finally had to be restricted to land. Queenie continued her life with Frank on the boat, serving well as a companion. In the late 1960's Queenie died of throat cancer. Frank finally brought a border collie called "Pal."
Frank continued to run his charters out of San Pedro, CA. until he caught pneumonia and his daughter, Florine brought him and "Pal" up to Burbank. Florine lived on Avon Street just a short block away from the back lots of Warner Brothers Studio. You could look through the wire fence and watch the "shooting crews." Frank continued to live with his daughter. His condition did not improve and he finally sold the "Sea Queen." In December of 1971, he died at the Burbank hospital.
