He entered the Navy and was a Radio Man 3rd class. His body was never recovered as his submarine, the USS Shark, was thought to have been downed by a Japanese torpedo in February 1942 whilst in the Java sea. The last radio messages did not give any indication that there was anything out fo the ordinary coming.
