Joseph's remain were recovered and he is now interred in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia.

Joseph served as a Technical Sergeant on C-47 #41-38601, 6th Squadron, 374th Troop Carrier Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 9, 1940, prior to the war, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Driver and also as Single, without dependents.

C-47 #41-38601 took off from Dobodura, Oro Province Papua New Guinea on a mission to the 5 Mile Drome (Ward Drome) National Capital District, Papua New Guinea. Soon after takeoff they were attacked by Japanese Zeros and shot down over the north coast of New Guinea. C-47 #41-38631 was also shot down more than likely by the same Zeros either on the same day or the day after.

Joseph was first declared "Missing In Action" and his status was changed to "Killed In Action" after his remains were recovered.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.
