Carl Friedan, 86, of Sarasota, died of cancer on December 22, 2005 at his home.

He was born September 22, 1919 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and came to Sarasota in 1991 from New York City. He ran his own advertising agency in New York City and continued as a consultant until very recently.

In his youth, he worked as a performing magician and produced summer stock theater in New England. He graduated from Boston Latin School, Class of 1937. He served in the 69th Division in World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was born and raised a Jew and lived as an atheist.

Survivors include his three ex-wives, Betty, Noreen, and Donatella Pes; his children, Daniel of Princeton, New Jersey, Jonathan of Philadelphia and Emily of Buffalo, New York; a step-son, John Holzach of New York City; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 4:15 p.m. today in Sapphire Shores Park on Sun Circle in Sarasota.
