Josephine, known as Lizzie, died on 8 May 1896 in a rampant diphtheria epidemic that scourged central Stearns County. Her two younger sisters died of the same. Sister Katharina died the previous June and youngest sister Eva died a week after her own death on 14 May 1896. Lizzie's mother, Eva Gully, also died the same spring, two months earlier, in March 1896 from pleurisy.

Lizzie's brother Mathias caught the fever next, but he recovered. The Gully home was horribly empty and silent. Mr. Michael Gully survived with his two sons Jake and Math. He remarried three years later, had one daughter born in 1900, and then his new wife died of consumption three years into their marriage. He raised his three children, Jake, Math and Anna (Fleischhacker) to adulthood.
Lizzie shares a grave marker with her sister Eva.

Lizzie had been named for her godmother and paternal aunt Josephine Elizabeth (Gully) Finneman. written by Gregory Dorr
