Often called "Smiley" Quiett, she was born August 5, 1917 to Harold Scott and Ivy Myrtle Thomas in Gordon, Nebraska. The family moved to Oklahoma when Mr. Thomas went to work as a geologist for Kerr-McGee. In 1933, Claudia married James Hoyt Quiett. The following year she graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City with their newborn son, James Harold, attending the ceremony. Two years later, Judith Marian was born to the couple, and two years after that, another son, Thomas Richard was born into the family. During the great depression while Jim was in the Navy, Claudia raised their three children in the back of the cleaners that she worked in during the day. The family was all members of University Place Christian Church, where Claudia was very active in the Christian Women's Fellowship. After returning home from the service, Jim and Claudia both went to work at Tinker AFB. Several years later Claudia quit that job just prior to giving birth to another daughter, Janis Marie. The other three children were 15, 17, and 19 yrs old at this time, and were soon to go to the Navy Reserve, get married, and go to Korea in the Air Force, respectively. In 1963, Claudia, Jim, and Janis moved to a home in the Village. In 1967, Jim preceded Claudia in death. Claudia went back to work first with the area's Welcome Wagon, then as an appointment setter for a carpeting company, and finally as executive secretary at Sooner Icee Company, where she retired several years later. From her four children, Claudia was blessed with eight grandchildren: Chuck, Debbie Sue, Debbie Ann, Paul, David, Scott, Missy, Tammie, and Cassie. From the grandchildren, she was blessed with eight great grandchildren: Lane, Christy, Josh, Brittany, Justin, Bethany, Marcus, and Stevie; and from them, four great great grandchildren. Several of the grandchildren knew her as NaNa. Preceding her in death are her parents, both brothers, children Jimmy and Judy, and her grandson, Chuck. On January 16, 2005 Claudia peacefully left this world to join her dearly departed in Heaven. She will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005 at Britton Christian Church.
