Ehlers, who was born in Norderstapel, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, immigrated to America in 1867 with his parents, Hans Holst Ehlers and Wiebke Peters Ehlers, and siblings, Margaretha Anna Ehlers Dierks, John Ehlers Sr., Hans H. Ehlers, Anna Ehlers Eggers, Henning Ehlers, Peter Ehlers and Claus Heinrich Ehlers.
On 22 January 1884, Carsten married Augusta M. Glahn (1860-1936) in Lyons, Clinton County, Iowa. The couple, later divorced, had two children who died as newborns. Carsten farmed south of Reinbeck, near the farms of his brothers John, Henning, and Claus, until his death at age 50.
