Politician, businessman, rancher. He also was Governor of Hawaii Island, 1892-1893, during the reign of Queen Liliuokalani. Baker and his brother Robert Hoapili Baker served as models for the internationally known Kamehameha statue. (The original is in North Kohala; a replacement is prominently located in downtown Honolulu.)

His Excellency JOHN TAMATOA BAKER, Governor of Hawai'i Island [8.2.1892] - [25.2.1893], born 1852 in Wailupe, Honolulu, son of Adam Baker, and his wife, Luka Pruvia, daughter of Pupuhi, a Tahitian missionary, and his wife, Milia. He died 7th September 1921.
