OBITUARY
Hobart L. Doerr
Civil Rights Backer Spent Career Teaching Math
by Stephen Frye
Of The Oakland Press

Hobart L. Doerr always considered himself lucky, from his war experiences to meeting his wife and raising his family. Mr. Doerr, of Milford, died Sunday at age 79.

Like his late wife, Ruth, Mr. Doerr spent his career teaching. He taught at the Madison Junior High in Pontiac from the early 1950s until 1980 when he retired.

His wife had taught math and computer courses at Walled Lake Central and Clifford Smart Junior High for 25 years until retiring in the mid-1980s.

He began his career teaching history in northern Michigan, though after one year he moved to Bloomfield Hills. He spent the majority of his career teaching math, as did his late wife. He also occasionally taught geography.

In the early 1960s, he supported the growing civil rights movement. His son, David Doerr remembers being in fourth or fifth grade and going with his father to sympathy marches in Pontiac.

Mr. Doerr served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was stationed in North Africa and Italy during the war, loading bombs into B-17 aircraft. He also served as a machinist, doing repair work as well as distributed and organized the mail for his company.

He was a longtime listener of jazz music, and his favorite hobby was building model airplanes.

Ruth Doerr, his wife of 49 years, died in 1997.

Mr. Doerr is survived by his children, David (Patricia) Doerr of Milford, Marian (Jim) Heaney of Massachusetts, and Keith Doerr of Ann Arbor; 5 grandchildren; brother, William (Joanne) Wagenhauser; sister Phyllis Joan Delles; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services are planned for 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1851 E. Commerce Road, Milford. The Rev. Ronald Anderson will officiate. Burial will be at Milford Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation is at Lynch and Sons (Richardson-Bird Chapel) at 404 E. Liberty, Milford, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p,m. Tuesday.

Memorials can be made to the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.
