John was the son of John Zima Sr. and Anna Zwan Peternell Zima (Anna Zwan, daughter of Barthol Zwan, was married first to Jacob Peternell who died in an accident within two years of their marriage). John Zima Sr. immigrated in 1883 and married the widow in 1888. Both John & his wife, Anna, were from the same area of Slovenia (Gorje, under the shadow of Castle Bled) and would have known each other growing up. The original Zima home in Slovenia still stands, overlooking a lovely rushing creek on a hill and in the late 1970s still had a Zima living there.

John Felix Zima (later changed to John Fred Zima)was born in the home in St. Stephen, Minnesota, the last born of six children, two of whom died as infants. John's father was a difficult man to get along with. John's older brother, James, inherited the farm and John Jr. struck out on his own. He served in both World Wars. He and his wife, Cecille lived in Flint, MI at some point, but ended up in Tawas, MI. They retired to Florida where John died in Miami and Cecile in Plantation in the Florida Keys. Their bodies were transferred back to Tawas for burial.
