Richard Schaefer, 57, of New Ulm died Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Searles with Father Mark Steffl celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation will be 4 - 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm.

Richard is survived by his wife, Lynn Lewis Schaefer of New Ulm; daughter, Sarah Schaefer of New Ulm; son, Aaron Schaefer of New Ulm; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sherry and Dick Kuck of New Ulm, Ann and Jim Schilling of Wabasso, Doris and Peter Morew of Costa Rica, Joan and Tom Asmus of Woodbury; brothers and sisters-in-law, Donald, Jr. and Diana Schaefer of New Ulm, Joel and Missy Schaefer of Cleveland; many nieces; and nephews; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Ottile Lewis of Fedora, South Dakota; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lee and Linetta Lewis of Fedora, South Dakota, Lana Lewis of Anchorage, Alaska, Larry and Cindy Lewis of Fedora, South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Richard John Schaefer was born on July 31, 1953 in New Ulm to Donald, Sr. and Theresa (Tauber) Schaefer. He graduated from New Ulm High School in 1971 and then served an apprenticeship with Union 292 IBEW. He became a Journeyman and since 1984 he was an "A" Master Electrician. On November 23, 1985 he was united in marriage to Lynn Lewis at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Searles. Richard farmed in Cottonwood Township, Brown County all his life. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Local Union 343 for thirty five years. Richard was also a member of the Grain Millers International Union and worked at Cenex Harvest States in Mankato for the last 21 years. Richard enjoyed going to auctions, fixing and creating things, exploring local history, outdoor activities, gardening, planting trees, and connecting family genealogy. He was a steward of the land, a hard worker, and enjoyed providing for his family. Richard was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Searles.
