Charles Leo, son of Jesse and Sophie (Vaughn) Canaday, was born Aug. 22, 1930, in Springfield, Illinois. As a child his family moved to Exeland, Wisconsin, and he graduated from Bruce High School in 1948. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Navy, and served 9 years during the Korean Conflict in Hawaii and California. He married Joanne Dettlaff on Jan. 19, 1952, in Milwaukee. After Charles was honorably discharge the family moved to Bruce, then to Milwaukee where Chuck worked for A.C. Electronics and Saint Francis School District. In 1971, Chuck moved his family to Augusta, where for 5 years they owned and operated the Augusta Coast to Coast Store. He eventually worked as hardware sales representative for La Crosse Steel and Jeske Hardware. Since 2000, Chuck and Joan occasionally worked as greeters at the Eau Claire Wal-Mart. Chuck was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Augusta, serving as deacon. He enjoyed golfing, deer hunting, fishing, traveling, and spending many winter months in Mesa, Arizona. The love he had for his family and his Lord was the most important element of his life. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Joanne of Augusta; 2 daughters, Suzan and Jim Mayo of Durand, Robin and Dale Wood of Eau Claire; 2 sons, Mike and Jolene Canaday of Augusta, Curt and Heidi Canaday of Mesa, AZ; 10 grandchildren, Mauri (Trent) Moss, Luke (Lisa) Canaday, Josh Mayo, Nick (Sarah) Canaday, Amanda (Jayson) Wade, Jason (fiancée Sarah Gravert) Wood, Kyle ( special friend, Kaytlin LeMier) Wood, Alison Wood, Aidan Canaday-Allen, Colton Canaday-Allen; 7 great grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Bernice Dettlaff and Audrey Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Howard and William Canaday, and daughter, Lynn Marie Canaday on March 20, 2009.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Augusta, with Pastor John Van Gorkom officiating. Burial will be in the West Lawn Cemetery in Augusta. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Augusta, and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
