BENNO PETER BRITZ

Benno Peter Britz was born Feb. 7, 1918, in Cold Spring, Minn. At the age of 2, after the death of his mother, he moved with his father, brothers, and sister to Muenster, Saskatchewan. Benno grew up in Saskatchewan and then moved to Portland in 1940. He married Phoebe Huether in 1942. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary June 29, 2010. During World War II he served in the U.S. 8th Army Air Corps for three years and was stationed in Watton, England, for 2« years. After the service, he returned to Portland and worked for Safeway and Zenner's Grocery. In 1956 Benno started the Big B Market. He and Phoebe remained in the grocery business for 27 years. Benno is survived by his wife, Phoebe; daughter, Bernadette Britz-Erdmann; son-in-law, Stephen Erdmann; granddaughters, Heather Houck Seethoff (Jon) and Andrea Houck Frascone (Tony); and great-grandsons, Taylor and Cole Frascone. His daughter Elaine died of cancer in 1994 at the age of 40. A rosary will be recited at 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, in Young's Funeral Home, Tigard. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 13,2010, in St. Anthony Catholic Church, Tigard. Private interment will follow the Mass in the St. Anthony Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to the Building Fund Capital Campaign, in care of the Development Office, St. Anthony Catholic Church, 9905 S.W. McKenzie St., Tigard, OR 97223.
