The Rev. Raymond Lee Karns, 73, of Fifth Avenue, Clarion, a United Methodist minister, died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, in Clarion Hospital.

Born April 8, 1928, in Oil City, he was a son of William Raymond and Elizabeth Beebe Criswell Karns.

He was a 1946 graduate of Cranberry High School and attended Chandler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga., and Kansas City United Methodist Seminary.

Rev. Karns served in the United State Army from 1946 to 1948. He was employed for 18 years at Joy Manufacturing Co.

Rev. Karns answered the Lord's call and was ordained in the United Methodist Church, serving the Nicklin/Lupher Charge from 1964 to 1972; New Salem Charge from 1972 to 1976; Cooperstown Charge from 1976 to 1984; Christ United Methodist Church in Uniontown from 1984 to 1988; Strattanville, Asbury/Corsica Charge from 1988 to 1995, retiring that year.

After retirement, he served the Old Zion/Big Bend Charge from 1997 to 1998. Rev. Karns also served on the Cherry Run Camp Board and was financial secretary for the Koinonia Christian Fellowship on Clarion University Campus. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Clarion.

Rev. Karns was married in the United Presbyterian Church, Oil City, Aug. 25, 1951, to Margaret Jane McKenzie, who survives. Also surviving are five sons and their spouses, Kenneth S. and Judy Karns of Cranberry, Arthur D. and Carolyn Karns of Louisburg, Kan., Thomas M. and Linda A. Karns of Cranberry, Timothy A. Karns and Jodi Kistler of Cooperstown and William D. and Julia Karns of Dallas, Ga.; three daughters, Julia A. Gruver and husband, David, of Mayport, Linda L. Karns of Sturgis, Mich., and Mary Ellen Wolbert and husband, John, of Oil City; nine grandchildren, Chad, Steven, Scott, Christa and Seth Karns, Dale and Abby Gruver, Lisa Incognito and Eric Fleming; and one great-grandchild, Austin Karns.

He also is survived by one sister, Eva Lou Amon of Franklin RD 2.

In addition to his parents, Rev. Karns was preceded in death by three sisters, Anna Miller, Grace Greenawald and Elva Graham; one brother, Donald Criswell; and one grandson, Donald Raymond Karns.

Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Goble Funeral Home of Clarion, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday in the First United Methodist Church in Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the church with the Rev. John O. Magargee, D.S. of the Franklin District, officiating.

Memorials may be made to the Cherry Run Camp or to the Koinonia Christian Fellowship.
